They are the gatherings we have for celebrating everyday! The middle of the week pizza nights with friends, the happy hour at our place after work, the midweek celebration dinner, or the ‘just because’ hang-out. They are the gatherings we have with one another that deepen our relationships and a are way to share our daily lives in community. They are often casual, often small, but always meaningful!
Everyday celebrations often happen at home and don’t require much! However, if you haven’t prepared your toolbox, or wrapped your mind around your quick go-to’s, they can become a source of major stress. Here are our tips for preparing yourself & your home for everyday gatherings.
It doesn’t really matter how big or small your house is, all you need to do is identify your “go-to” room for when you’re hosting this type of gathering. Is it the family room? Maybe the screened porch? How about the kitchen island? No matter where it is, pick the space now where you will default and give that space a little extra TLC. To me, this means making the space beautiful and somewhere I’m happy with ahead of time! Usually, in my default rooms, I’ll have a few extra plants, some candles, and I try within reason to keep this room cleaner than the others. This keeps you from frantically rearranging decor, cleaning, or preparing when you have a gathering mid week!
Everyday gatherings typically don’t require much! Just a few intentionally selected pieces to serve your guests on the fly! I would recommend either keeping these pieces in a cabinet all together as your one stop shop, OR just making sure they are easy to access as you need them!
A Pitcher: We recommend a beautiful, simple, glass pitcher as a way to present drinks to your guests with ease. Along with this, make sure you have drinking glasses. We recommend having 8-12 drinking glasses available.
A Platter: Whether you are putting out hot appetizers or using your new found skills to make a charcuterie board, we recommend having at least one flat platter! If you want to go the extra mile, go ahead and buy 3 to match with the colors of the food! We always recommend one wood, one white, and one marble/stone. With this, we recommend having solid color plates available for the guests.
Candles or Essential Oil Diffusers : Clean scents often communicate clean homes! Scents communicate comfort, provide ambience, and the appearance of cleanliness! We recommend having a candle or diffuser to light before and during your gathering to add an added layer of belonging.
Everyday gatherings can come with a whole array of occasions. Since these gatherings are often simple, instead of planning a whole agenda, simply have an objective to which you plan from! For example, if the goal is a game night, you don’t want to spend the whole evening eating a five course meal but instead have ‘quick food’. Or if the objective is to get to know someone, you may want to enjoy the longer dinner! If its someone’s birthday you will want to plan small details that are personalized to the guest of honor. Again, the goal is not perfection, just intentionality! Simple objectives simplify the gatherings!
Just remember, above all else, gathering is the goal! Slowly but surely you can build on skills to make you more confident filling your space! You are capable, you are ready, you are a good host!
